We invite you to be part of a unique event that will create a permanent foundation for Durham’s longest-standing African American non-profit organization, Durham Colored Library Inc. (DCL). On Sunday, October 23, 2022, at [3pm], we will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore, the city’s first African American doctor and a man who cared deeply about the arts and culture of Durham’s Black community, as well as its prosperity, health, education, and mutual uplift.

This event, is a musical journey set at the turn of the last century, is a benefit for DCL. The concert is being created and performed by the author of Dr. Moore’s definitive biography, his great-great-granddaughter, and acclaimed operatic soprano Shana Blake Hill-Saya. At the piano will be the prominent collaborative artist and Director of Duke Opera Theater, David Heid.

The afternoon program will include carefully selected classical songs, American standards, spirituals, and hymns, along with stories and historical context illustrating the four major eras of Dr. Moore’s life. Designed as an artist salon, this event will take place in a venue styled to resemble an intimate parlor inspired by Dr. Moore’s home at 606 Fayetteville Street. His house was a regular venue for family music-making and where famous visiting thought leaders, poets, artists, and musicians often stopped through to debate, discuss, rehearse and perform.

The program will be 90mins, including a twenty-minute intermission, and will be followed by a book signing.

The funds raised from this event will particularly enable DCL to make a difference in children’s self-vision. This will help stabilize the organization’s foundation and position it for strategic growth to continue providing resources to amplify Black stories, leaders, and culture.

Event Tickets and Sponsorship Opportunities

The sponsorship deadline for printing and event recognition is September 1st.

Your check may also be mailed to: DCL Inc., PO Box 2736, Durham, NC 27705

Your commitment to sponsor at one of the levels below will give DCL the capacity to expand its work as compelling storytellers of Black culture through programs targeting youth, seniors, and the visually impaired. At the top of our priorities is closing the student achievement gap by growing African American talent available to employers in the future.

DCL programs include the Merrick Washington Magazine, a regular compendium of articles about issues and topics relevant to African Americans. Selections are culled from a variety of respected national sources and cover topics ranging from business, history, and sports to arts and culture, science, and technology. Techies4Tomorrow℠, our newest project, is a software learning tool designed to narrow the achievement gap for Blacks in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). T4T inspires third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade African American students through online, interactive games that tell the stories of African American STEM professionals both current and historical, female and male. Exposing children to images of people who look like them and telling their impressive life stories helps students visualize themselves overcoming challenges and achieving great success.

Event sponsorships will provide invaluable support for these DCL programs and will provide a strong foundation for planning and growth.
